Mr. Busuke Shimoe, 84 years old, was about 1300 meters from the hypocenter of the Hiroshima atomic bomb when it detonated on August 6, 1945. His skin was burned from much of his body, and several of the fingers on his hand were fused together. His wife and daughter were killed. He had cancer and his son has liver cancer. He is a tireless worker on behalf of the hibakusha, or A-Bomb survivors. He has made several pilgrimages to temples throughout Japan for world peace, and has testified before the United Nations.
