Heavy cruiser Furutaka

**

Japanese heavy cruiser Furutaka at sea. Furutaka was one of the first generation of high speed heavy cruisers in the Imperial Japanese navy, intended to counter the American Omaha-class and the British Hawkins-class scout cruisers. On May 6, 1942 she was attacked by four Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses, but was not damaged... Was sank, however on October 12, 1942 by the USS Salt Lake City (CL/CA-25) and USS Duncan (DD-485) at the Battle of Cape Esperance, Solomon islands.
