Officers and petty officers of the 3rd Kure Special Landing Force, Imperial Japanese Navy, which occupied the small island of Tulagi, Solomon Islands, for Japan in May, 1942.  This unit was  virtually annihilated when the island was recaptured by US Marines, supported by the Royal Australian Navy, in effect, in one day of fierce fighting in August of the same year. First pictures of the Japanese occupation of Peiping (Beijing) in China, on August 13, 1937. Under the banner of the rising sun, Japanese troops are shown passing from the Chinese City of Peiping into the Tartar City through Chen-men, the main gate leading onward to the palaces in the Forbidden City. Just a stone's throw away is the American Embassy, where American residents of Peiping flocked when Sino-Japanese hostilities were at their worst.
