“Gamba di Ferro” captured

British troops surrounding a Regia Aeronautica’s Fiat CR.42 fighter aircraft captured on an airstrip abandoned by the Italians surely during their retreat following the British offensive, Operation “Compass”, in Western Egypt and Eastern Libya, December 1940-February 1941. This CR.42 is a plane of the 97th Squadriglia, 9th Gruppo, 4th Stormo, with the “Gamba di Ferro” emblem on the fin not officially adopted by the 9th Gruppo leaded by the Maggiore (Squadron Leader) Ernesto Botto. “Gamba di Ferro” (Iron Leg) was the surname of the same Botto which flew with the right leg artificial replacing the limb lost during a clash with Republican fighter during the Spanish Civil War. The fuselage Stormo’s emblem, the "Cavallino Rampante" (Prancing Horse), is already removed from the hunting souvenir same as the Fascio Littorio (Fascist Emblem) under the wing. Victor Sierra
