Macchi MC.205 “Veltro” (a “true” MC.205, note the two wing 20mm cannons) of Italian Air Force’s 51st Stormo on maintenance near a Southern Italy airstrip during the Co-belligerence with the Allies. After the Armistice, 8 September 1943, the Regia Aeronautica salvaged 37 MC.205 in part of the 4th Stormo, at Pescara and on Apulia’s airfields, and in part of the 51st Stormo on the Sardinia’s airfield. Another some twenty MC.202’s airframes was converted in MC.205 replacing the DB.601 engine with the DB.205 salvaged from Italian and German wrecks. All this planes was employed over the Balkans for close air support an and escort missions and in 1944 some of these was replaced by Spitfire V and Bell P-39. Victor Sierra
