On a Libyan airfield

IMC Archives

Starting under the control of a power plant mechanic, while the pilot, on the left, waiting, of an Italian fighter Macchi MC.202 “Folgore” (Lightning) on a Libyan airfield, end 1941 or early 1942. Note the tarmac’s rough conditions of typical North African airfield. In background another “Folgore”, a Fiat truck (Fiat 666 or 626) and the tents of the camp. The aircraft is a “Folgore” of Regia Aeronautica’s 71st Squadriglia, 17th Gruppo, 1st Stormo (note the emblem, the “Arciere/Archer” over the fuselage’s whit band). The 17th Gruppo with his brand new MC.202s arrived in Libya on 25 November 1942, at Martuba airfield. Victor Sierra
