A “Red Devil” in American hands

57th FG Association

The “Diavolo Rosso” (Red Devil), emblem of Italian Regia Aeronautica’s 3rd Gruppo Caccia Terrestre (Land Fighter Group), on the nose of this Messerschmitt Bf-109G-6 abandoned on a Sicilian airfield after the conquest of Island by Allied forces and seized by American troops. This photo was taken by Master Sergeant Fred M. Symmank, Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Chief of USAAF’s 65th Fighter Squadron, 57th Fighter Group, perhaps at Pachino Airfield. The 65th FS was at Pachino from 20 to 31 July 1943 and, after, at Scordia up to 18 September 1943 before to move on Italian mainland. Victor Sierra
