A German commission was invited to test the new Italian fighters of serie 5: the Germans remained enthusiast of the Fiat G55 that was considered the best, followed respectively by the Re 2005 and the Macchi 205. A German production of the Fiat G 55 was taken in consideration but later abandoned for political and industrial logistics reasons.

Fighters serie 5: Fiat G 55

The fighters serie 5 were the last attempt of Regia Aeronautica to develop new modern fighters able to front the anglosaxon best planes and air superiority. The fighters serie 5 were the Macchi 205, the Fiat G 55 and the Reggiane 2005. Here a Macchi 205 of the Italian cobelligerant Air force. DVX 

Fighters serie 5: Macchi 205

The Reggiane 2005 Sagittario was the third of the Serie 5 fighters. Small numbers of this aircraft entered in combat in summer 1945 with great success especially against the Allied heavy bombers. After the Italian armistice, only an handful of Re 2005 could be used by the ANR because the Reggiane factory in Reggio Emilia was completely destroyed by a massive bombing in  january 1944. DVX
