Ariete attacking

Betasom was the Atlantic base of Italian submarines, in Bordeaux. 
In the photo, the crews of two submarines are saluting another crew returning from a mission.
After the Italian armistice, Betasom crews and troops joined the RSI (but only two submarines were still there). The most troops came back in Italy, but much others continued service in France, especially in coastal batteries and defences.
