In an attempt to improve performance of the Macchi MC.200 “Saetta”, his designer Mario Castoldi created the MC.201 designed around the new Fiat radial engine 1,000-HP A.76 RC-40 but the prototype (military registration MM436) flew, August 1940, with the same 870-HP Fiat A.74 RC 38 of the “200”. At this time the project “202” with the powerful German engine DB601 were already advanced and the MC.201 was abandoned. Victor Sierra
