General Vilmos Nagy of Hungary

A loyal supporter of Regent Horthy, this son of Szekely-land served as commander of the First Hungarian Army and later Minister of Defense. General Nagy worked to improve the conditions of common soldiers as well as to humanize the treatment of the forced laborers at the front. Thereby he earned the ire of the radical right wing, leading to his resignation in 1943, and his eventual Arrow Cross arrest and imprisonment in 1944.
