The Soviets deployed mainly T-34 tanks at the Don during their massive February, 1943 attack, while the Hungarian tanks, under Hitler's direct control, were held in reserve for too long. The defeat at the Don accelerated the development of the Zrinyi II assault howitzer designed for infantry support, but not yet available at the Don.
