On the picture you can see a honvéd(hungarian solider). He's name is Roszoly András and he fought in the Don. He was a sniper. You can recognize that he was a sniper because he is wearing Sniper tassels in the left side. He is buried in Tolcsva (Hungary). Rest in Peace.

After Horthy's deposition, government nominally passed into the hands of a local right-wing nationalist  and anti-Semite named Szalasi (Sah-laa-shee), the leader of the Arrow-Cross &quot;Hungarist&quot; party.  He is shown here marching through a Buda Castle square, wearing a long overcoat, followed by a Hungarist retinue, including his Minister of Defense General Beregfy,  in the front row.

The display of armbands indicated adherance to the Arrow-Cross, which stood in agreement with Hitler for continuing the struggle against the Soviet Union. In any case, real decision-making had shifted to the Third Reich.  The Szalasi government , including  Beregfy, moved to western Hungary in early December. After the war, both were executed by the new regime.

After the Axis had withdrawn to Buda from the Pest side on January 17, 1945, the remaining Danube bridges, such as the venerable Chain Bridge in the photo, were blown up by German sappers. In the meanwhile, the winter cold froze up the Danube, which had several consequences. 

The many tons of supplies sent by German forces each day could no longer be floated into the city on heavy barges at night.  Red Army units could simply walk over on the ice, for example to fight for the possession of  Margit Island.  And finally, obtaining water for the population, always a task, became even more difficult. Many residents, while trying to break through the ice for getting water, as in the photo above, were shot by snipers.
