"Becsulettel a Hazaert" -- "For Country with Honor" reads the caption on the fresh grave of a fallen Magyar soldier located somewhere in the Ukraine. The inscription spoke for hundreds of thousands, resting in marked and unmarked graves.

After heavy fighting in the Carpathian mountains, many units of the Hungarian army, like the one shown above in southern Hungary, managed to retreat in good order and go on fighting another day, all the way across the country, into April, 1945.

Somewhere behind the front, recovering Honved soldiers, and their nurses and  doctors,  gather for some sort of occasion, in the gymnasium of a military hospital, which appears to be a peacetime school building.
