The posture and countenance of young men going off to war appears to be the same anywhere in the world. Self-confident and proud, they seem to be eager to do battle and take heroic action, knowing little yet about the abysmal reality of war -- as in the case of these two young Hungarians.

A Second Army unit of artillery soldiers pose for a photo at the Don River front during 1942. When the Soviet onslaught began in January, 1943, in the absence of a sufficient number of tanks, originally promised by Berlin, Hungarian artillery proved to be the most effective in delaying Red Army advance.
