Residents of central London file out of a bomb shelter after a German air-raid

Frau Merkel and her pal, Barney Schauble, have given Ireland a few beatings in recent times but, on 17 October, 1936, the boot was on the other foot when Ireland beat Germany 5-2 in a friendly international football (soccer) match at Dalymount Park, Dublin.  Here, members of the German team are seen giving the "German Greeting" in response to the playing of the National Anthems.  The lack of seating confirms the structure in the background as the School End "Shed" - ah, scene of many Sundays in my youth !  Still, politics follows you everywhere ... Best regards, JR.

Ireland beats Germany !

Ms Honorine Williamson, a member of the Dorking Air Raid Precautions Patrol (and, it would appear, the London Auxiliary Ambulance Service), poses in front of her ambulance with a smile, ?1940.  Honorine was a niece of the British musical composer, Vaughan Williams.  She was subsequently killed when a bomb destroyed her home.  RIP.  JR.
