Homefront
Liberty ships lined up at the Los Angeles Naval Yard. The concept of a basic, mass-produced cargo ship to support the war effort was originally developed by Britain, but was then taken up and perfected by the USA. Since the Liberty Ships were assembled by fairly unskilled labourers to save money, quality was rather mixed; at one extreme, a badly-built ship might fall to pieces on the launch ramp. Nonetheless, they played a vital role in ensuring that Britain and the Pacific theatre were properly supplied. Britain might not have survived without American Liberty Ships. Best regards, JR.
