German fighter Messerschmitt Bf.109E (No. 1985) of Lt. Heinz Schnabel (Heinz Schnabel) 1./JG3 shot down by British fighters and made an emergency landing,September 3, 1940. The pilot was taken prisoner and held in the English POW camp number 15 in the village of Shap (England), in the former hotel. On November 24, 1941 Lt. Heinz Schnabel with another prisoner of war Harry Vapplerom (pilot of a Heinkel He-111 bomber from KG27) made one of the most audacious escapes in the history of the Second World War. Using deception upon entering the RAF airfield Kingstown, with ground equipment ,they managed to get off the ground in a English Miles Magister training aircraft. After refueling on another RAF airfield , the German pilots planned on flying to Holland, but flew only to the English town of Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, where they were caught and sent to the airfield RAF Horsham St.Faith. They were then sent back to camp in Shap, where they were punished with a 28-day stay in solitary confinement. greetz, brummbar
