Achtung!

South Orvieto, Umbria, Central Italy, 1944: an iron railroad bridge of the line Rome-Florence, over the Tiber river, after a heavy bombardment of the Mediterranean Allied Air Forces. The Germans posted the sign on the right, with the death danger symbol, and the warning: «Attention! Bridge not in working condition» Note also two plaques scarcely readable and likely referred to the construction year. The first, on the right, has a the letters AD for Anno Domini (Lord’s year) plus a Roman numeral perhaps MCMXXXII (1932), the other, on the left, has perhaps Anno X EF (Year Ten of Fascist Era, 1932). Note also, on the right, on the bridge’s parapet, the Fascist Emblem (Fascio Littorio). After the war this bridge was rebuilt and is still in use for the regional railway line Rome-Florence (the today high-speed rail Rome-Florence-Bologna or Rome-Milan no stop pass on other line and over another viaduct).
