The winners of modern pentathlon at the Berlin olympic games. Gotthard Hendrick, luftwaffe, gold medal, Charles Leonard, infantry, silver, Silvano Abbà, cavalleria, bronze.
Hendrick becamen a Luftwaffe high commander and ace with 15 victories (5 in Spain 10 on the Eastern front). Leonard rose tha ranks of the US army and became general at the time of Vietnam war. Abbà, unfortunatly, was the lone among the 3 to not survive the war, but he earned a more important medal, the gold one for bravery and to memory, for his attitude during the Iscebuscenskj cavarly charge in Russia. This photo shows the Station buildings in the background.The statue in front is a remembrance to the WW1 victims.The Germans burned hundred of houses in august 1914.The road leadind from the station to the city center(then called Stationstreet now it's Avenue of the Allies =Bondgenotenlaan) is about 1 km.The railroad and yards and repair factory are just behind the stationbuilding spreading out left and right along the citylimits.So it's understandable that there was a lot of collaterl damage and many civilians killed.
