During the war, Tibet was approached both by the Allies and the Axis, who we can only assume were trying to deduce whether the locals would take up a friendly or enemy side in the event of conflict breaking out in their lands.

Qian Xuesen, originally born in Huangzhou, China was a remarkably talented scientist who made huge contributions to America's missile program during WW2. 

As one of the founders of the California Institute of Technology's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, he spent much time and effort drawing up plans for jet rockets that the United States would be able to use to combat the deadly German V2. 
Although he contributed quite a lot to America and it's dawning technological advancements, Xuesen soon found himself subjected to political discrimination and personal attacks. Suspected of having Communist sympathies, he was stripped of all rights to access US military complexes and detained for five years under house arrest. 

When at last he was released in 1955, Qian moved back to China and went on to help design rockets for the People's Republic.
