Churchill in Syracuse

57th Fighter Group

Summer 1943: two Italian civilians in a street of Syracuse just after the entry of Allies in this very old town of Sicily. The younger with his bicycle looking carefully at the lens of the photographer (an USAAF’s 57th Fighter Group serviceman), the aged seem totally uninterested at the events. Below the signpost Siracusa Centro e Porto (Syracuse City Center and Harbor) a poster with a Churchill’s portrait (obviously!) above a British Forces post road insignia (Fort Base). The large black I in a circle indicate the presence of a fire hydrant (Idrante in Italian), a sign typical of Italian towns during war time. Victor Sierra
