German Paratroopers

Hermann-Bernhard Ramcke.

Bundesarchiv.

Generalmajor (later General der Fallschirmtruppe) Hermann-Bernhard Ramcke reviews German paratroops on Crete, July 1941. Ramcke (as Oberst) was the principal German commander on the ground during the (hairy, but successful) invasion of Crete as commander of German forces in the western part of the island. A tough and determined soldier in two world wars, he ended WW2 as one of the most highly decorated German fighters having been awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds. Best regards, JR.
