In fact, the Nazi regime was exploited to the hilt as a promotional vehicle for the Third Reich regime.  Swastikas draped Garmisch for the duration, and Hitler took the opportunity to display himself prominently.  Here, he greets the crowds on his arrival for the Games opening ceremony. Although they are not identifiable through the swirling snow, I recall that Deputy Fuhrer Rudolf Hess and Hitler's Deputy Head Adjutant, Julius Schaub, were among the platform party.
