German Leadership
Heinrich Himmler appears to be making a helpful point to his boss, SA leader Ernst Rohm. The photo must date from the late-1933/early 1934 period; Himmler is wearing the insignia of an SS Obergruppenfuhrer (early pattern), the rank he held during this period. Himmler had known Rohm going back to the Beer Hall Putsch days, and was given to expressing admiration for Rohm, almost up to the date in late-July, 1934, upon which SS death squads led by Sepp Dietrich and Theodor Eicke liquidated him, along with much of the SA leadership. Obedience to the Fuhrer, combined with the elimination to the aggrandisment of the SS represented by Rohm and a powerful SA, counted for a great deal more than any sense of old-comradeship here. Best regards, JR.
