German Leadership
Ullstein Bild (collection).
Adolf Hitler, in pensive mood, flanked by Queen Victoria's great-grandson, former Duke Charles Edward of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha wearing the uniform of SA-Gruppenfuhrer, late-1930s. Interestingly, in addition to his WW1 Iron Cross First Class, Charles Edward's left breast pocket is decorated by what is, almost certainly, the Coburg Badge. This was one of the highest (arguably the highest and most exclusive) political decoration of the National Socialist Party, and was reserved for those who had participated in the "demonstration" organised by Hitler in the Socialist-dominated town of Coburg on 14 October, 1922. This suggests that the ex-Duke himself was regarded as having taken part in the celebrated demonstration/riot - something that would have been quite consonant with his political concerns at that time. Best regards, JR.
