Field Marshal (Generalfeldmarschall) of the Luftwaffe, Albert Kesselring (30 November 1885-16 July 1960), on the left;  As Wehrmacht Commander-in-Chief South, he was the overall German commander in the Mediterranean Theater, which included the operations in North Africa. Kesselring later conducted an uncompromising defensive campaign against the Allied forces in Italy until he was injured in an accident in October 1944 - and Field Marshal (Generalfeldmarschall) Erwin Rommel, (15 November 1891-14 October 1944) "Desert Fox", Commander of the Afrika Korps, Axis Forces in North Africa, seen here together in Libya; 1942.
