German soldiers pause for a bite in the middle of fighting, while the city of Vitebsk, Belarus (USSR) burns; 22 August, 1941. The city was under German occupation (10 July 1941 - 26 June 1944). Much of the old city was destroyed in the ensuing battles between the Germans and the Red Army.
