German Forces

Sunflowers with Wiking.

?Bundesarchiv.

Soldier of 5th SS Division, "Wiking" in the Caucasus, 1942. The well-grown sunflowers suggest mid autumn. In spite of some of the rather idyllic scenes captured in photos from this campaign, "Wiking" suffered heavy casualties in this campaign, in which its units performed with great determination and élan. All in vain - Soviet resistance proved more difficult to crack than expected, the campaign fell short of its main objective (capturing the South Caucasus oilfields), and the destruction of the northern element of the overall summer operation (Stalingrad) ultimately forced the German forces in the Caucasus to yield all the ground they had captured. Best regards, JR.
