KV-1(a) on the Dunaburg-Leningrad road before Ostrau. It blocked the main road for almost 24 hours, had to be circumvented and could only then be shot up by an advanced 88mm army Flak gun. It turret is set at "6:00" and that's its rear in this photo. As you can imagine it was a much photographed and attention-getting object.

Road Block

A German MG-34 team from 18.Inf Division (mot.) firing from inside a building in Staraya Russa. X Army Korp created a virtually impregnable urban defence within the city that fended off numerous Soviet attacks throughout 1941–43. Although Soviet artillery gradually reduced the urban centre to rubble, the North-western Front’s failure to capture Staraya Russa played a large role in determining the outcome of the Demyansk campaign.

MG Team

One of 2 KV-1(b)s near Guari Estonia that shocked the spearheads of 6th Panzer on the Dunaburg-Pleskau road & could only be put out of action when 88mm Flak guns were brought up. The 2nd KV can barely be made out burning in the background.
