Literally the face of war. At least three faces are clearly recognizable here, and they look German. 

What apparently has happen is German prisoners beheaded by partisans, or maybe blown to pieces by a Soviet artillery shell landing nearby.

A German convoy stopped outside the Citroën garage on the Quai de Willebroeck, Brussels, 17th May, 1940. Both the garage and the building with the tower on the background still stand today, allowing  for a perfect comparision.
