German Forces
Imperial War Museum
Conceal behind a hill along an out-of-the-way campaign track for elude the ubiquitous Allied fighter-bombers was vain. Likely this was the fate of this German mechanized column completely destroyed in an area up North of Rome (perhaps near one of the great northward Consular Ways) during the retreat from the Italian Capital (liberated by the Allies on 4 June 1944) and discovered by the advancing British troops. The completely burned truck in foreground is a former Italian Army vehicle, one of many seized by the German forces on September 1943 after the Armistice of the Italy with the Allies, a Fiat truck, likely a 626.
