On the way from Ivalo to Rovaniemi, Lappland 1941-44.

 There was/is a German build  airport in Ivalo. The German HQ was in Rovaiemi area.  The harbours to Gulf of Bothnia were in Oulu and Vaasa. The latter the main port for Germans.

On the way ro southern Lapland

Generalmajor Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck in uniform, wearing (among many other decorations) the Pour le Mérite with Oak Leaves, portrayed by Heinrich Hoffmann, 1933.  One of Germany's most successful WW1 commanders (in East Africa), Von Lettow remained true to his political principles and became involved in Monarchist politics (unlike many of his former comrades, who were lip-service Monarchists, he seems actually to have wanted the Monarchy restored).  He refused the offer of official appointments from Hitler, and shunned Naziism generally, but did, in a way, make his contribution to the Fatherland in WW2 - both of his sons were killed in action serving with the Heer.
