Believe it or not (2) ...

Bundesarchiv./Ernst Krause (author)

SS-Hauptsturmfuhrer Dr. Ernst Schaefer, head of the 1938-'39 German Tibetan Expedition, dines with a Tibetan Buddhist abbot. It would be easy to write off the SS-Ahnenerbe's researches as looney nonsense. In one sense, this would be correct. However, "research" sponsored by the Ahnenerbe was used to underpin the nonsensical racial theories and prepostorous historical theories upon which, intellectually at least, the Nazi regime purported to rest. There was also a degree of direct involvement in the criminal enterprises of the SS - for example, in securing human subjects for inhumane medical and biological experiments - which has never been fully clarified and, in view of the loss of documents at the end of the war, may never be. Best regards, JR.
