A short pause outside Kalach: the soldiers rest on one arm, unable to lie flat because of their heavy packs. They were not allowed to take these off because they had to be ready to move on at a moments notice. The rider stays on his horse, probably because he was too tired to dismount and remount without help. In such situations, it was a great boon to belong to a motorized unit (scanned by HOS Bandit)
