At a hanger in Peenemunde, V-2s, painted in a camouflage olive, stand ready for launching. The village of Peenemunde, on an island off of Germany's Baltic coast, was the center of German development of the V-1 and V-2. The Allies made an major effort to knock out the launch sites from the air, but never succeeded. Peenamunde was not put out of action until it was captured by the Soviet Army in April 1945.
