while enjoying his retirement he received the visit of the main leaders of a conspiracy against Hitler, Operation Valkyrie was. Hoepner joined the group of conspirators, and July 20, 1944 was arrested and charged with participating in the plot and the bombing of the Fuehrer. After a summary trial, where he presented a sorry (probably like many other conspirators was emaciated and tortured), the great panzer general was sentenced to death and was eventually hanged in prison in Berlin-Ploetzensee.
