Though shelled from sea and land and bombed from the air, the heroic garrison of the Westerplatte, Danzig, held out to the last man against overwhelming odds.  Above, the German army flag is seen flying over the ammunition dump when the stronghold was finally captured.  The gallantry shown by the Polish defenders was praised even by their German enemies.
