Waffen-Hauptsturmführer ZANIS BUTKUS (*29.07.1906 in Augstkalne/Latvia; +15.05.1999 in Palmer, Alaska/USA). Knight Cross on 21.09.1944. Awarded the Close combat clasp in Gold! At the end of the war Butkus survived 59 confirmed close combat days and was wounded seven times.

Waffen-Hauptscharführer der SS ZANIS ANSONS (*04.12.1911 in Kandau/Latvia; +24.11.1968 same). Another version says he is still MIA after being captured in the Courland pocket. Knight Cross awarded on 16.01.1945, also awarded the close combat clasp in bronze.

Nicknamed "The Butcher of Lyon," Barbie was directly responsible for the death of 26,000 Jews. As a result of his crimes, Hitler himself awarded Barbie the First Class Iron Cross with Swords. During the intermediate postward period (1945-1955) Barbie was protected and employed by American Intelligence agents (the US Counter-Intellengence Corps- CIC) who used his counter-insurgency skills to suppress leftist resistance movements aimed against the American occupation of Bolivia. With US protection Barbie escaped to Bolivia under a the alias of Klaus Altmann and traveled on visas provided to him by the American Red Cross (as did Adolf Elchmann.) In his absence Barbie was convicted and given the death penalty. In 1957 Barbie obtained Bolivian citizenship, but in 1983 he was identified by Klarsfelds (a Nazi hunter) and deported to Europe for punishment.
