Field Marshal Walter Model inspects a young soldier serving in an Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.D, in April 1944. The Sd.Kfz. 251 (Sonderkraftfahrzeug 251) half-track was a WW2 German armored fighting vehicle designed to transport the panzergrenadiers (German mechanized infantry) into battle. On 31 January 1944, Model was named Commander-in-Chief of Army Group North. He was the first commander in the Panzer Divisions, to introduce the "Shield and Sword" policy, which stated, that retreats are tolerable, but only if they paved the way for a counter-stroke later.
