The new cavalry ...

Library of Congress (collection).

PzKpfw I (left) and PzKpfw II tanks cross the river Bzura during the German invasion of Poland, September, 1939. The Panzers began to construct their myth in Poland. Reality was rather different. As the vast bulk of the German tank force consisted of light machines, they suffered substantial tank losses from Polish conventional artillery, antitank rifles and even cannon-armed tankettes. The tank force had been significantly updated by the time of the invasion of France - but substantial numbers of light machines were still performing front line duties at the time of Operation Barbarossa in Summer, 1941. Best regards, JR.
