PzKpfw I tanks of the Heer involved in one of their original intended functions - mounting an impressive parade, 1938.  Some of the original Panzer Divisions were direct conversions of earlier Reichswehr cavalry units  which, in turn, hearkened back to distinguished cavalry units of the Imperial Army.  The Heer consciously imposed Imperial cavalry traditions on the new forces - the black uniforms and curious beret-helmets (echoing Hussar caps), some of the insignia and so on.  Here, the tank in the foreground flies the unit ensign "uncased" in much the same way as would have been done if riding a horse on parade.  Best regards, JR.

Cavalry in a new age ...

Standard Kfz 13 armoured car, armed with MG13 7.92mm machine-gun.  This vehicle carried no radio, relying on semaphore communication; collective communication was supplied by the radio-equipped, unarmed Kfz 14 variant.  This was one of the earliest "new" armoured cars to enter service with the Reichswehr/Wehrmacht.  Conceived as an armoured scout car, it entered service in 1934.  Due to be replaced by the Sd Kfz 221 by 1939, the "early" arrival of war meant that many Kfz 13 and 14 remained in service, some certainly as late as 1941.  Best regards, JR.
