German Armor in Italy

One of the mainstays of the German Armored Forces in the first part of WWII, was the Pzkpfw III medium tank. This was reliable and well-protected but carried only modest offensive armament. The tanks pictured here are those seen later in the middle part of the war, after side armor had been added to protect the upper part of the tracks, the running gear, and the junction of the hull and turret. The Germans made excellent use of captured equipment of all types. The Marder self-propelled anti-tank gun, for example, was the Germans own 75mm Pak 40 anti-tank gun on a limited traverse mounting, on the hull of the Czechoslovak LT-38 tank, which had been used as a gun tank earlier in the war with the designation PzKpfw 38 (t) (scanned by HOS Bandit)
