SS-Standartenführer (Colonel) Joachim "Jochen" Peiper (born January 15th 1915, murdered July 13th 1976 in Traves/France). Commander of SS-Panzer-Regiment 1 "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler", holder of the Knight's Cross with oakleaves and swords. Known as the last German KIA of WW2. Murdered in his house in France when unknown assassins set his house on fire in the middle of the night. The murderers have never been investigated. Peiper was sentenced to death for the shooting of about 70 American POW's by one of his units at Malmedy/Belgium. At the trial Peiper tried to get the overall responsibility for the incident and wanted his men to be relieved. The request was denied, Peiper was amnestied and released in 1956.
