Luftwaffe aircraft fly in triple-chevron formation during a political demonstration, 1937. What sort of aircraft is difficult to ascertain at this resolution. However, close examination makes it clear that these are fixed-undercarriage biplanes. Furthermore, the shape of the tail fin strongly suggests that these are Gotha Go-145s. While obsolete for any purposes by the time of its first production, the Go-145 was one of the first aircraft to enter Luftwaffe service, and was produced in substantial numbers. The primary reason for this seems to have been because the Go-145 was a well-tried format, easy and cheap to produce and, therefore, useful for presentation purposes at demonstrations like this. It had the useful (indeed, very important) function as a powered-flight trainer, and also functioned during the war as a "nuisance" bomber, conducting "nuisance" raids on Soviet forces almost to the end. As a result, this museum piece ended up as the Luftwaffe's longest-serving aircraft, by some way. Best regards, JR.
