Undercarriage failure of a Junkers Ju 88C-6 night fighter of 1./NJG2 at Catania airfield, Sicily, 1941. On January 1942 the order of battles of German Air Forces on Mediterranean Theater record the 1./NJG2 (NJG for Nachtjagdgeschwader/Night Fighter Squadron) and the 4./NJG2 at Catania respectively with a force of a dozen and five Ju 88C-6s. At this time the NJG2 were part of Luftflotte 2, II II Fliegerkorps. One of pilots of this unit was the ace Heinz Rökker, Staffelkapitän of 1./NJG 2 on 15 December 1942, 64 victories, six of them achieved during the deployment in Sicily and Mediterranean:
