Sebastopol - battered bastion.

Sebastopol - battered bastion.

Early modern bastion protecting the entrance to Sebastopol harbour following German bombardment (aerial and artillery), 1942. The area inland of the old fortifications appears to have been completely wasted. This type of harbour-guard bastion is not uncommon from the late-medieval/early modern period - another example would be Fort St. Ivan at Dubrovnik. Robust structures - but defence against 20th century attack does not work this way ... Best regards, JR.
