The Germans placed great reliance on the Messerschmitt Bf 110 twin-engined heavy fighter and multi-role warplane. This had heavy armament and good range, but lacked the outright performance and agility to cope with attacks of the RAFs Hawker Hurricanes and SuperSubmarine Spitfire single-engined fighters.
