Hauptmann (Captain) Hans-Joachim "Jochen" Marseille (born December 13th, 1919 in Berlin, KIA September 30th, 1942 near Sidi Abd el Rahman/Egypt. Captain of 3rd Squadron/Jagd-Geschwader 27. 4th holder of the Knight's Cross with oakleaves, swords and diamonds. He achieved 158 aerial victories on 388 missions, all victories against western opponents, mostly Brits. Marseille was called the virtuoso among fighter aces, it took him just a few shots to shoot down the enemy because he was a sharpshooter, always aiming for the cockpit. On September 1st, 1942 he achieved 17 (!!!) confirmed victories, on one day in June 1942 he shot down six opponents in 11 minutes. "The Star of Africa" died undefeated on September 30th, 1942 when he had to deboard his burning plane and his head collided with his plane's tail unit so that he lost consciousness and was not able to open the parachute anymore.
