Two distinguished warriors in woods of Karelia. Staff sergeant Esa Karjalainen (left) from III/JR 44/5.Div. has been nominated for the Mannerheim Cross. Nietjärvi area, Ladoga Karelia. 26.7.1944. Esa Ukko Karjalainen (1917-1981), Civil Guard member from 1934, entered Finnish Army in 1938 and served in roles of infantry squad leader and platoon second-in-command during WW2. Along with many other engagements, he fought in two important defense battles of Finland; the Battle of Vyborg Bay (2.-13.3.1940) and the Battle of Nietjärvi (11.-17.7.1944). He was wounded by shrapnel to his arm and back 10.3.1940, and by bullet to his arm 20.7.1941. Decorated with Medal of Liberty 1st class, Iron Cross 2nd class and Cross of Liberty 4th class (x2), he was demobilized from military service 18.11.1944. He was awarded the Mannerheim Cross 21.12.1944, for his courage and persistence in numerous battles and for his determined counter-attacks when reclaiming lost positions.
